Why athletes are at risk

Why training depletes your iron

Iron is essential for athletic performance. It is the core component of haemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen to your working muscles. Without adequate iron, your body simply cannot deliver the oxygen your muscles need to perform and recover.

Athletes are at higher risk of iron deficiency for several reasons. Intense training increases iron loss through sweat. Running causes foot strike haemolysis, tiny amounts of red blood cell destruction with each footstrike that adds up over miles. Heavy training also increases gut permeability, causing low-level gastrointestinal blood loss.

Female athletes face an additional risk through menstruation. Combined with the losses from training, this makes iron deficiency extremely common, and often undiagnosed.

The frustrating thing is that you do not need to be technically anaemic to feel the performance impact. Even mild iron depletion without full anaemia has been shown to reduce aerobic capacity, impair muscle function, and slow recovery.

How iron deficiency affects performance

These symptoms can creep up gradually, making them easy to attribute to overtraining or a bad patch. If several of these sound familiar, getting your iron checked is a sensible first step.

Unexplained fatigue

Feeling tired between sessions and not recovering properly overnight despite adequate sleep and nutrition.

Performance plateau

Unable to reach previous times, weights, or outputs despite consistent training. Feeling flat and heavy.

Slow recovery

Taking longer than expected to feel ready for the next session. DOMS lasting longer than it should.

Breathlessness

Getting breathless at lower intensities than usual. Your cardiovascular system struggling more than expected.

Reduced motivation

Loss of drive to train. Can feel psychological but often has a physiological root in iron deficiency.

Elevated resting heart rate

The heart working harder to compensate for reduced oxygen-carrying capacity in the blood.


Who qualifies

Are you eligible?

Every patient is assessed individually by our GPs. Athletes often require IV iron at ferritin levels that would not trigger treatment in a non-athlete, because the performance threshold is different.

Confirmed iron deficiency on blood testing

We look at ferritin, haemoglobin, and transferrin saturation. In symptomatic athletes, ferritin below 30 micrograms/L is generally considered to warrant treatment.

Performance-related symptoms

Fatigue, reduced output, slow recovery, and breathlessness in the context of iron deficiency are clinically relevant even without full anaemia.

Oral iron not appropriate or insufficient

Many athletes cannot tolerate the gastrointestinal side effects of oral iron during training. IV iron avoids this entirely and works faster.

Clinical assessment confirming iron as primary cause
